I had the daunting task, although I procrastinated, to write a 3-4 page paper which is due in about 18 hours. We had to choose a topic to write about, and since we'll be discussing the Harlem Renaissance this week, I chose that topic. Blah blah blah.
Anyway, my topic required me to write a poem as if I was a poet during that time (1920s-30s, think of the Cotton Club, speakeasies and the Prohibition). Below you may find it. I hope it peaks your interest. Maybe this can apply to current times?
Below is a poem I wrote in honor of Claude McKay and Langston Hughes:
“Fight Past the Plight”
Brothers and sisters!
Lend me your ear.
Madams and Misters!
Let us be without fear.
Though the road we travel
Consists of wretched bumps,
Lift your face from the gravel,
It is then we triumph.
While this nation boasts unity,
Its actions upon this lie.
May we take this opportunity
To refuse to comply.
Brothers and sisters!
Muster your might!
Madams and Misters!
Let us fight past the plight!
